The Canadiar Silver Star wore many different colour schemes during its service with the RCAF, but one of the rarest and least known is the overall disruptive camouflage which was worn only by aircraft serving with the RCAF's Air Division in Europe during the Cold War.
This set provides markings for two aircraft from a choice of three different variations of the basic camouflage scheme. One dates from the Air Division's early days in the 1950s, with Grey/green upper surfaces over PRU Blue lowers, matching the Air Division's Sabres. The next two date from the 1980s and 1990s, with light grey undersurfaces and subdued markings. The very rarely seen "Kiwi", "Penguin" and "Snoopy" fin markings are supplied.
Sufficient decals are provided to do two of the three aircraft featured.
Three sheets make up this set in 1/48 scale.
The first sheet covers the majority of the markings needed. Roundels, flags, tail markings and stencils sufficient to complete two models.
The second sheet holds RCAF style numbers in 7 different sizes, to allow for modelling aircraft not portrayed in the instructions. Some consultation with references will be required.
The third sheet is an addendum containing roundels and tail markings which could not fit onto the main sheet.
Three 8 1/2 X 11 sheet printed in full colour and one black-and-white sheet comprise the instructions. Each page shows top and bottom, left and right side views of the subject aircraft.
The instruction sheet mentions that the decals may be harmed by strong setting solutions. I did a test using portions of the incorrect fuselage flash and my poor old knocked-about Revell 1/72 Voodoo.
- 1. Solvaset
- 2. Micro Sol
- 3. Micro Set
- 4. No setting solution
The results show that used carefully, Solvaset did not damage this decal, and that used without any setting solution at all, the decal still conforms to the moulded detail. These days the question is moot given that Canada Customs does not allow Solvaset into the country, so obeying the instructions about its use is an easy decision.
