The Book
Kalmbach Publishing Company has released a Detailing Projects For Freight Cars and Locomotives as part of their Model Railroader Modeling and Painting Series by Pelle K. Soeborg. Mr Soeborg takes the reader through 15 modeling projects in this 84 page book. He begins by covering tools and materials needed for weathering as well as several prototype photos to inspire the reader. Some projects covered include: Giving an old box car a contemporary look, making scrap metal loads from pot scrubbers and adding interesting spills to tank cars.

As part of this review I decided to try one of the projects to improve the look of a good looking coal hopper. The techniques involve using paint washes and dry pigments to age the hopper. In this case I used a Roundhouse 40 hopper. The kit was assembled using the standard parts plus an aftermarket oval hopper end, KayDee wheels and couplers. This New York Central hopper has a build date in the mid 1950s but was being weathered for the mid 1960s. The car was to have a used but not abused appearance.

The car was first brushed with rust color paint heavily on the inside and very lightly in a few places on the outside. The car was then brushed using dry pigments and covered with a clear flat varnish.

conclusion
I followed the project instructions and was pleased with the outcome. The NYC RR hopper does look more realistic than it was out of the box. Painting the trucks and wheels really puts the model a notch above the ordinary.

I would highly recommend this book.

Comments

That's how I remember ICG's hoppers looking. This book looks like it is full of worthwhile techniques for military and auto modelers as well as for train modelers.

yes, roof images. Something often under represented in RXR reference materials. River on the cover!

One thing that I'll add here. All the projects represented in the book are contemporary North American railroad subjects, however, the authors weathering technics apply to all eras and railroads Worldwide. A modeler needs to have appropriate photographs of the subject available before beginning a project.
