This M60A1 Engine & Compartment set is 1/35 (No. 1834). Inside, you receive 77 resin pieces, a length of copper wire, rubber piping and a instruction sheet.
What Comes in the Box
The first impression is good. The casting is excellent - no bubbles at all. You have to cut off the usual casting blocks from the bigger parts, and there are quite a few parts casted in open moulds calling for a lot of work in cleaning up these parts. The detail overall is nicely done.
Check Your Fit
First of all, I want to point out that this kit is intended to be added to the Tamiya M60 series of kits. I used it with the recently released M60 from Italeri. I found that you might want to display the engine outside the engine compartment - regardless of what kit you wind up using - because the assembled Powerpack will not fit inside the model kit without a lot of work. A second reason for leaving the Powerpack out is that the large central engine bay cover is cast smaller than the corresponding kit part - resulting in a less than perfect fit.
Additionally, pay close attention to the instruction sheet! Some parts are illustrated in more than one sketch, and some parts are only refered to in a short text blurb on the back. This Instruction Sheet offers token help in placing the many small parts. I noted some parts number callouts are wrong - e.g.. the FuelCells. Having detailed references are necessary. Properly locating the engine compartment parts calls for additional work. The Air Intake Ducts needed to be relocated, and the Ducts in the Firewall will have to be located just above the Fuel Cells - and not behind them. The Engine has no Flywheel Housing and the Transmission Housing lacks the actual connection point for the Engine. I feel the kit has little to nothing in common with the Continental AVDS-1790 and the Allison CD-850 in this area joint.To show the Engine Covers in the open position, the hinges need to be reworked.
