LOOKS GREAT!! nice job for your first NMF build.
nice catch on the prop cuffs too. never noticed that before. never knew the cuffs were rubber sleeves either.

I'll have to ask my brother about the flying surfaces, but I would think that if they used aluminum dope on the wing, they did the same for the flying surfaces, as they were riveted as well.
Joel

thanks Joel. i am starting to get the itch to build one of these.

Venelin,
I'm really impressed with your weathering. The various NM Panels add that something extra. Same with the cuffs on the prop blades. I never gave them much thought as from what I understand, the P-51s were the only USAAF fighter to use cuff blades.

Thanks!

I haven't seen that overspray, on the propellers cuffs, on most bluenosed P-51 models .

I'm working on the base also, it will represent landing strip with some grass on the sides.

Cheers!

i guess it is just a matter of if whoever was painting the nose was "inspired" enough to mask off the blades.-lol-

Meantime, leaving the different effects to dry, I'm working on the base. Simple picture frame 20x25cm, balsa wood for the sides and filling with insulation foam and cork.

Thanks!

Venelin,
The finished P-51D looks outstanding. Just the right amount of weathering, yet nothing is over done. As for the prop cuffs, once the blades were glued in place, the effect is just perfect. What a great find.

Coming together beautifully Venelin, great build!
As Joel said, the detail on those prop cuffs based on the original images is a really nice touch, one I will definitely remember.

Wash on the wheels with mixture of AK Dust+Earth effects. Now the diamond pattern shows better:

Thank you!

Only the two mirrors on the canopy remained. I decided to make them out of spare clear frame, from 1/35 Panzer . They are 2mm in diameter, which is close enough, comparing to the Tamiya Spitfire (which I have in my stash) mirror. They are same on both Mustangs and Spitfires

Well, another thing. By the Murphy law, I found in the Quickboost news for June, that they released correct propeller w/tool and spinner, for Tamiya Mustangs (they are a bit off shape).
And that when the bird is almost finished, arghhh... Maybe I will replace it, still not decided yet

Cheers!

Progress with the base. The concrete squares are 8cm, painted with various colors, pre-shading etc., then oil dot filter with three oils-Light, Dark Grey and Buff. There will be washes and pigments after.

Soil is homemade paste from White glue/Talcum powder in ratio 1/2, mixed with Earth pigments and brown acrylic paint. I will put static grass in the end

Thanks!

Wash, pigments and static grass applied on the base. Some cleaning and tough up on the frame left. The bird sits very nice, I have to put only the mirrors

Venelin,
That's really one nice base. The perfect display for the P-51D.
