Next year could be a salt free year. The KGV will be finished for Christmas which means wing things will be the order of the day. I've already signed up for the Hawker campaign with the Hurricane, the big 3 campaign is next which I'm hoping to finish one of each, and then the Schwalbe campaign to follow. So there's 5 already and if I can I'll squeeze in a Martlet for the Rotary campaign!

Russell! As I've said elsewhere, ship models are a whole different thing than cranking out ten fighter models in smaller scales!

Stefan! Don't be shy, that FW of your's deserves a link! I'll revisit later for inspiration!

Wow! 10! That's an inspirational amount of completed builds Magnus! Congratulations!

I'll manage to scrape together just 2 finishes this year: The KGV started over 5 years ago and the Trans Am around 4 years ago

Russell! There is a strong motivation to get back to and finish the FW this side of the New Year: if I assume that I'll manage to finish both the Yaks (I see no reason why I shouldn't since they aren't exactly record complicated ), the FW would take 2019's grand total up to ten finished models. That would then be a major personal best for me and an even and easy-to-remember number !

For me there will always only be one scale and that is 1/72-unless of course it's 1/24 but that's an entirely different ball game

After seeing your build of Arma's metal wing Hurricane I'm sorely tempted to acquire and build it. I'll probably add it to the collection at some point though.

However for the Sopwith-Hawker campaign it'll be fabric wing effort by Airfix that's been residing in my stash for a while now, all the while working its wily ways on me to take it out of the box, open those plastic bags and in-hale deeply the smell of fresh styrene Along with a dozen or so other red boxes

Russell! Thanks, I'll try to live up to your expectations ! What Hurricane will you be doing? If you go for 1/72, I can honestly recommend the Arma Hobby kit!

Robert! To be honest: I don't really know and you could very well be right regarding the wheel well colours. I followed Eduard's painting instructions and they say RLM 02. According to my references, the photos of this aircraft were taken during the spring of 1944 so it would then be an early-build F-8, I have the impression that the emergency measures with labour- and materials-saving procedures were begun later than so but as I say above, I don't know for sure! Right or wrong, they will stay grey !


After a wash to pick out the surface detail, I'll continue with the lower surfaces tomorrow!

Looks good but weren’t the wheel wells left in unpainted aluminium by the time the F8 was in production? Sure I read that in a few things by Michael Ullmann. Dropping the 02 for internal surfaces (and some underside panels) was tried out first on 190s.

Torsten! You're right, it is without doubt a bit on the yellow side! Paint is MRP-68 RLM 79 "Sandgelb (variant 1)". "Variant 1" makes me wonder what "Variant 2" is, probably a browner version. Another reason for the rather yellow look is my choice of a white primer, with a grey primer it would have looked a bit less conspicious.


All the major painting finished! After Torsten pointing out the yellow tone I've gone over it once again with RLM 79 and it got a bit darker, I trust my weathering to do the rest !

Minnie the Mouse decals are on, the only decals I will use on this one. Swastika was overpainted and I would suspect this goes for the service markings and stencilling as well.

Magnus, what paint did you use for RLM 79? To me it looks too yellowish. Sometimes it's called "Sand Yellow" and sometime "Sand Brown". But maybe it's just my Monitor at work ....

It took a few evenings but now the green spots are finally in place! I didn't use MRP for these, I went for my old love Gunze.




While I was at it, I painted the lower surfaces blue and painted the crosses on.

I should really have been working yesterday but I was waiting for a few CAD-files from a customer so I got a couple of bonus hours at the workbench before lunch. Sometimes life is extra good !


The Mediterranean option in the kit is "White 1", in my references there is a photo of "White 2" so I'll go for that one in order to get something a tiny bit more unique (not that it is that important but anyway...). Most of the other markings were painted over so is is a very simple change of identity!


I have often been a bit lazy when it comes to primer, this time I took it seriously and repainted where I had been doing some extra sanding so that I got a base that was almost solidly white. With the sand paint being in the yellow family of paint hues, this was a good thing, I could paint very thinly without having to cover up any bare plastic patches that require a more solid paint cover.

Got to get those fuselage crosses on (they will get partly overpainted) before the real fun starts: green spots !

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this build Magnus, as it's a kit I've had on my wishlist for sometime now

Not a bad idea attaching the top wing root first as I've seen various people use that method as it tends to avoid gaps appearing later on in the build

My ambitions for the last few weeks have been to finish a bunch of kits already started, this is another one that fits into this description even if I haven't blogged it until now! It was started almost two years ago according to the EXIF-data in the photos, so here we go!

...and being an Eduard kit one can get away with this! The best method for getting a good wing root joint but fit has to be good in order for this to work.
