Was´'t an SANDF vehicle (Ratel?) based on a French AMX? I forget which one, but I'm sure Heller has all the French stuff so a convcersion isn't entirely impossible..

I'm guessing..

James you don't know have of it...

I love building armour, I'm currently in the SANDF. I work on the Big Six (GV6), I work on the Batteleur MRL (I even launched 38 rockets in one session, a time in my life I reckon is the best ever), I've got buddies working on the G5, Rooikat and Olifant Mk1B MBT, I even worked on some Engineer vehicles, but of all the 1/1 scale vehicles I work on, i can't get any models of them to build.

I'm telling you man it is hell.........

I just had an idea for a group build, or campaign as they're known around here..

How about a 'what if' build, like, say, the SANDF has Leopard 2-A6's or 2nd hand Challenger 1's? What machinery would you like to see in SA colours (aside from the not available kits of vehicles that the SANDF are using)?

I know what you mean, it is hell...

My cousin was in Bloem, worked on the Rooikat. Trained as a Gunner. He totally loves it. Pity he transferred to Pretoria now.

I suppose a person could scratchbuild your own vehicles if we really wanted too...

Interesting... thanks Michael, I see card models have become quite popular lately...

If you don't mind resin kits or 1/72, John Weidemann from IPMS CT casts a Rooivalk...

Howzit Michael,

The Ratel was based on the 6x6 British Alvis Saracen APC. Are you perhaps thinking of the Eland, a modified version of the 4x4 Panhard AML armoured car?

I think Chris Baxter (BaxMod) may be working on a 1/35 Ratel... not 100% sure, as he and his brother, Murray, usually do 1/72...

Ace Models do a 1/72 Panhard AML 60 (see HERE) and IIRC they were planning on doing a 90 as well.... I'm not sure if that materialised though...

Thanks for clearing that up Rudi.. I'm still learning here (points for enthousiasme though). But as there could be 1:35 versions of the originals available, I'm sure a wee bit of scratching elbow grease will convert them nicely into SA versions?

Howzit Michael,

When it comes to scrathcbuilding, anything is possible :-) :-)

One of the guys at the club recently did a Eland 90 conversion to the Ace kit, so yes, a scratchbuild conversion is definitely possible. So I don't see why it wouldn't be possible on 1/35...

Cheers

Rudi
