Photography Basics for Modeling
The Model, and Background...The background you choose will have an impact on how well your model is perceived. For a build blog, it is quite appropriate to photograph your model on a work table, but consider the clutter within the shot. Keep the composition in mind and keep your work space clean, if tools and paint are present, they should be part of the build process. .
Photographing sub-assemblies and the completed model should be photographed in a different area. Most work areas tend to accumulate dust, whether from sanding or from your constant use of the area. A clean and relatively dust free area is ideal to shoot your models as any amount of dust on the model will clearly be on display and diminish the quality of the photos. Use a non fibrous, matt finish background for your model. Thin stock coloured artist Bristol board works nicely.
If you are shooting from above, lie it flat on a table, if you are shooting level with the model, set the cardboard curved under and behind to give you a seamless background.
Experiment with the colour of the background, different colours will greatly change the feel of the photograph.
Take time before you photograph and clean your model. Use a clean artist brush to remove any sanding residue or dust. If fearful of damaging fragile parts, use your airbrush. A good photograph will also aid you in spotting imperfections in your build, there is no better impartial judge of your build than a series of close up photos.
