Maltese Furban : Ray Farrugia

  • Your modelling club/s and the effect they have had on your modelling?
  • I am lucky enough to be a member of the best modelling club in the world that is SSM!
Society for Scale Modellers which is also IPMS Malta was founded in 1981 and growing stronger ever since. I joined in 1986 together with my two brothers and SSM is truly a Band of Brothers. I owe all that I know and that I have achieved thru these years to SSM.
SSM incorporates all genres of our hobby, and we meet every Wednesday at our own premises, which also include a BBQ area on the roof. In summer it is BBQ time every fortnight while in winter we have dinners every fortnight as well. On the alternate nights we just order takeaways with delivery service so we won’t miss even one minute while purchasing food .
The only modelling secret that we have at SSM is that we have no modelling secret as we share our knowledge week in week out, so that we never reach a sturation point, and thus we keep growing. That is the way I’ve been bred and that is the way that I preach......share your knowledge so that others share theirs and we all keep learning from each other.

  • Favourite modelling competition to enter?
  • It has to be EuroMilitaire in Folkestone. The feeling you get down there in the competition room IMHO is uncomparable. For me it is the Olympic Games of our hobby!

  • Most prized award ever won?
  • Again it has to be EuroMilitaire related! Last year 2009, and after a 13yr jinx/itch of attending Euro, I managed to step on that stage and recieve my 1st Gold Medal  It was for Model Cellar’s 1/32nd Werner Voss who is now displayed with his Albatros DIII made by my next brother Joseph. I hope Engin uploaded photos of Voss with his Albatross DIII.

  • Your favourite modelling things ?
  • My tools. :)

  • Your favourite modelling purchase/figure?
  • My favourite purchase and figure of all time is my 120mm Highland King, the only figure I won’t ever sell, or at least save him for last (he’s making his last stand anyway ) if I ever get bankrupt .

  • Your best recent modelling/figure purchase?
  • Hot from the oven, it has to be Romeo’s 90mm Templar Knight I bought from Catania last December prior to its launch in April another 3 members from SSM bought this great kit.

  • What does it mean for you or how do you define the miniature figure?
  • For me, it is pure fun, relaxation, and satisfaction. Also for my part, I am painting (my childhood dream of painting) and modelling (my childhood dream of playing) so I am combining two childhood dreams into one refined venture I hope and pray to God I’ll enjoy till eternity what else could be better .

  • How do you evaluate the present situation of the figures and its future?
  • I think that the present situation is still going strong despite world crisis. The future is always bright even if only one of us remains to sculpt and paint figures.

Thanks Engin for making this possible. Thanks to you guys as you're making me blush A special thanks to Louis my bruv, as he's one of the old timers of SSM. He was and still is an inspiration to us all as an accomplished modeller in his own right with two IPMS BoS feathers on his cap, and also for being young at heart at the tender age of 61 Ray
