Chieftain Mk 9

  • move
Ian Holahan shares with us some pictures of a 1/35th Scale Tamiya Chieftain that was upgraded from the kit Mk.3/5 variety into a Mk.9 version using scratch built modifications only. The tank depicted is from 14th/20th Kings Hussars, B-Squadron, British Berlin Infantry Brigade, circa 1986-87. This build was recently completed for the Cold War MBT Campaign on Armorama

About Ian (SaxonTheShiba)
FROM: , UNITED STATES

I have been modeling for about forty years and enjoy building 1/32 scale and 1/48th scale aircraft as well as an occasional piece of 1/35th scale armor. I love building modern USN/USMC subjects as well as RAF/RCAF/RAAF/FAA prop driven and jet subjects.

Ian, great build; - scratch building all the modifications! I have done of Berlin Urban pattern, using scratch build modifications too. The application of the camouflage with the gun was a lengthy process but ultimately worth the effort

Very nice work and the camo is pretty simply done, not as complicated as the real thing. Heck, I know I couldn't do it but it is beautiful. Any chances on a step-by-step of the paint application? ~ Jeff

Nice and impressive build, I followed it from the campaign topic. You should publish a build log about this. CagkanC

Thanks for the kind words everybody. It was a challenging project, to say the least, but I am glad I did it. Also, a special thanks must go out to Paul (1721LANCERS) for his invaluable pointers on the conversion and getting me squared away on some details that I would have completely missed for the MK9's. I could probably crank out a build log regarding the paint and conversion at some point. Best wishes, Ian

Excellent model!! One of my favorite MBTs. This really needs a state-of-the-art kit (you would think Trumpeter would sell a lot more of these than some of their paper-panzers).
